I had no idea the 2.0 in the 06/09 era Civic Si revved to 8,000 rpm. That is very impressive. Maybe these cars are cooler and more fun than I originally thought. What say you Oppo? Is this era of Civic Si an example of Honda at their best or an example of Honda when they weren’t trying?

I always liked them. Transmissions had shifting issues from what I remember and were finicky with fluid.

I like the engine. I’d like it more in the back of an MR2.

Correct. 2nd and 3rd gear grind was a notorious issues; the latter of the two being fixed by Honda

Unfortunately I have nothing but bad associations with this generation of Si because I interned with a guy whose parents bought him a brand new one and he was a total spoiled shitass. Both about the car and other things. Like seriously said my parents didn’t love me because they couldn’t afford to get me a car less than four years old. I’m the only one allowed to talk shit about my parents, buddy!

I want to say the engine in my ‘91 CRX Si revved to 8K, but I cannot be sure. And I have no recollection what the horsepower was, I just remember it was fun.

You could correct the issue with non-Honda fluid. I want to say it was an Amsoil blend but it was years ago.

S’more fun facts:

The 99-00 Si’s redline fuel cutoff was 8,250rpm.

The car was gear limited to 145mph, verified by me. You knew you had reached the cars top speed when it started banging off the rev limiter in 5th gear.

16 years later and I still want to Electron Blue Pearl all the things.

What an ass hole. I hate when a spoiled pos says shit like that. Jokes on him though I doubt he has a Camaro 1le or anything half as fun now.

Also I hate that cars are associated with certain kinds of owners. Definitely hurts the appeal of certain cars such as the Si or even things like Camaros/Mustangs

My sister has an 06 RSX-S which is the same car (engine, trans, chassis) just different body work.

I’ve driven it on several occasions and I like it, with a few buts. The engine is fun but not necessarily fast. It’s pretty gutless down low, you have to get it up to like 5k for VTEC to kick in (yo) in order to get it to come alive. That said, it’s got a close ratio gearbox which helps keep it up in the sweet spot. That makes it a fun car to drive hard. Otherwise it’s kind of annoying and the short 6th gear means it’s a screamer on the highway. I also find the handling to be a bit twitchy at the limit.

Overall it’s one of Honda’s better recent cars. It’s like an econobox that’s aspiring to be an S2000, which makes it fun. That said everyone in the family agreed that my WRX felt faster and more planted.

Kinja'd!!!0

I figure if you are driving on the back roads and on the twists and turns you are likely in that 5k plus range anyway. And I figured it would be a screamer on the highway but if it still gets 32mpg highway I think I would be able to live with it.

For a front wheel drive car the handling being twitchy doesn’t exactly surprise me.

Kinja'd!!!0

You’re right on the first count, its a fun backroads car, just watch that handling. That’s how I know it’s twitchy. I was bombing down a favorite road of mine. I was by no means going 10/10ths but I was definitely going harder than I should have, probably in any car, but especially one that isn’t mine. Anyways, there’s a little dip on the right edge of the road in this one part as you come out of a fast right hander and setup for a slower left hander. All the other cars I’ve run down this road have handled it fine. The RSX did not like it. Nothing terrible happened, but it did enough slipping and sliding to forever back me off in that car.

I have a friend who has an 8th gen Mugen Si and a 5th gen Prelude. He says the Prelude is more fun to drive, the Si has a better aftermarket, and that they’re a push power-wise.

I’ve never liked the 2-door 8th gen Si. The back end just looks weird to me.

Kinja'd!!!1

They’re fine as long as you think of them as a moderately-fast Civic and not an actual sports car. My RSX had a similar motor that would rev to 8600 but even then it felt like it was trapped in a reverse time warp relative to anything with real power.

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > RiceRocketeer Extraordinaire
03/21/2016 at 13:03

Kinja'd!!!0

That is a good way to look at it. So you think it is a different tier than say a Genesis coupe?

Kinja'd!!! RiceRocketeer Extraordinaire > JR1
03/21/2016 at 13:13

Kinja'd!!!1

I haven’t driven the Genesis coupe, but it definitely feels a big step behind anything I’ve driven with a turbo (GTI, Fiesta ST) or more cylinders (Infiniti G37, BMW anything).

That said, I put 125,000 miles on that car and nothing went seriously wrong, and I occasionally think about getting an 8th/9th gen Civic Si sedan as a daily driver.

03/22/2016 at 12:58

Kinja'd!!!0

The FD Civic’s K20 was a high point for Honda. The redline is high and the VTEC cam change is bonkers.

The K20 was gutless below the 5000 rpm-ish VTEC trigger, so it’s understandable that Honda later went to the K24 iVTEC for drivability and wider appeal.

Of course, the FD Type R never made it to the US but it was even crazier with an 8600 rpm redline.

Stock, or with an OEM Mugen exhaust, they sound great.

Anything aftermarket is way too boomy down low, and advertises more than what the car really has.

The Spoon Civic had its engine revving to 10,000rpm. I’d take the Spoon Civic but not for the reasons you think.

But I would be iffy about being impressed. That Si engine may have had that one cool charateristic, but the rest of the car has to match. And Honda, simply putting “DOHC” on the bottom bumper won’t cut it. Thats just like Ford putting “MUSTANG” on their bottom door half of their Mustangs.

https://www.spoonsports.eu/spoon-products…

Spoon has done some cool stuff to S2000's as well. I just don’t take Honda’s factory offerings to heart really after the 90's. You had to rely on aftermarket so people wouldn’t joke that the torque used to screw the cap on a Mountain Dew was more than a Civic’s.
